The Time to Plant is Now!

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Fall is officially here! One of the many “rules” of planting trees is always plant trees during a month that has an R in it. For example September, October, November and even December.

The official rule at Blue River nursery is that the best time to plant a tree is right now! We have planted during every single month of the year at this point of our history. The most important factors in being successful with your plantings are planting things correctly and having appropriate after-care once the tree is planted. To broaden your knowledge base on these issues check out our planting videos on YouTube, also check out our planting and care guide on the web site. If there are any questions on the material please call me at 260-414-6213 or contact me at shawnlocker@gmail.com.

If you have been considering planting a tree or two there has never been a better time! We have one of the largest selections of trees in the area. Furthermore we have some new varieties that we either have not had before like White Oak, Northern Red Oak, and Swamp White Oak. Oaks have a reputation for being slow growers that is somewhat inaccurate. we have some 22 year old Red Oak that we grew from tiny Seedlings that are 35-40′ tall.We have a new variety of Red Maple called Red Jewell that is showing some great potential in the Fall color arena. Come in and see this great looking group of trees. The color is a really dark red, Very Hot!

Many years ago we grew Cladrastis kentuckea also known as Yellow Wood. This plant is kind of low key and falls in the under appreciated group of good plants. This would be a good plant for someone who just cut down a bunch of ash trees and wants to start plant a more diverse collection of trees. Yellow Wood is adaptable to a wide range of soils which is a plus in our area! The plant is called Yellow Wood because of the color of the heartwood of the tree. Yellow Wood flowers with beautiful white racemes of fragrant flowers and has a beautiful compound leaf.

If space is a issue please consider our new dwarf Sugar Maple named Appolo. Appolo only grows to a height of 12′ or so. This plant has large leaves and a gorgeous pyramidal shape. Fall color is an amazing combination of reds, oranges, and yellows. Outstanding!

We also have a very diverse collection of flowering shrubs, evergreens, perennials, and vines. here is no shortage of plants here. I wish we sold out of everything each year at the end of the season. However we just keep on growing! We are an old school growing nursery. We never run out of cool plants!

We couldn't be happier with the landscaping they designed and installed!
