New Coreopsis Varieties

We are so absolutely ecstatic that winter is now over by 23 ish days already! One thing about this past winter is it gave us plenty of time to really figure out what kinds of plants we want to grow. In the last blog post we mentioned that we would be focusing more on native plants. We are now growing a couple different varieties of Trillium, Bloodroot, Virginia Blue Bells, and the one I am most excited about, the Rattlesnake Orchid.

Kentucky Coffee Trees

We are also growing many new varieties of native trees. I am especially happy we are now  growing Yellowood and Kentucky Coffee Trees again. These are two very tough native trees!

New Varieites of Perennials

There are lots of new varieties of perennials as well as some old ones we have not had in a while. In particular Pulsatilla rubra. What an outstanding perennial! I planted this plant on a project intermingled with Dianthus, Achillea Noblessa, Veronica Blue Bomb and it has done superb for 3 years. After the plant is done blooming the flower turns into a seed head that resembles a Clematis seed head.

In the morning when the dew and the sun hit these seed heads they look so cool. These plants make great companion plants for Salvia and many other drought tolerant varieties of plants that do not exceed 12” in the garden.

Brand New Plant Varieties

Some of the new plants would be a variegated Pulmonaria with pink flowers, 5 new cultivars of Coreopsis we have never grown before. These would include ‘Center Stage’, ‘Imperial Sun’, ‘Bengal Tiger’, ‘Red Satin’ and ‘Showstopper’.

A Variety of Hosta’s

We are Hosta binging again. This year it seems like we are going big or small. Hosta ‘Victory’ is a new big one we are doing that is variegated. We are also growing ‘Chief ‘Sitting Bull‘ which grows to 33” tall and 75” wide!  I guess Victory is going to be the Hosta of the year next year or the year afterwards. How many years in advance do they decide this stuff? A couple small ones that we are growing are Appletini and Minutini Part of what I assume is the tini series. There are a lot of tini named Hostas out there right now. There are 30-40 other new Hostas that are not on our website yet. We will get them on when we can. I am not trying to be aloof the real nursery is very demanding right now. The best thing if you can is visit the nursery in person and see all the new plants we are growing!

New Japanese Maples Such As Octopus

There are new Japanese Maples in the collection this year such as Acer palmatum ‘Octopus’ and ‘Jeddaloh Orange’. I wanted these two cutivars 13 years ago so its  good to be growing them finally. We also  have some great looking Acer Palmatum ‘Rhode Island Red’ and ‘Oshio Beni’ right now. I only have one or two Acer palmatum ‘Omurayama’ right now. Its been awhile since  we have had it available to sell. Its a green leaf cultivar that has a cascading branching habit. The fall color is just amazing when combined with the shape, oranges, yellows and reds. It looks like its on fire!

Acer palmatum  ‘Hubbs Red Willow Leaf’ and ‘Red Flash‘ are two new ones I am keeping my eye on as well, so far so good!

So Many Cool Evergreens and Dwarf Conifers To Choose From!

If you are into evergreens and dwarf conifers we have Metasequoia ‘Gold Rush’ in stock in 1 gal, 3 gal, and 5 gal plants available. We are revisiting some older cultivars such as Picea mariana ‘Golden’ and Picea omorika ‘Pendula Bruns’ that are personal favorites.

Other awesome conifers would be the huge collection of Pinus sylvestris ‘Aurea’ and ‘Gold Coin’ I have determined these two plants to be blizzard proof! Came through the winter from Hades unscathed!

These unusual Scots Pine cultivars are chartreuse through the growing season and then they turn butter yellow to gold during the winter. What a great show they put on especially when paired with plants that pproduce red berries in the winter and blue evergreens such as Picea pungens ‘Procumbens’ and Green evergreen such as Pinus strobus ‘Minitwist’. Pair this with some boulders and ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus ‘Huron Sunrise’ and you have something cool to look at during the winter months!

Get your grow on folks its time to plant again!

We couldn't be happier with the landscaping they designed and installed!
